Rhythms of Rest: Sabbath Rest Inspires Creativity

"Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy." --Psalm 33:3

When we step away from the relentless hum of daily life and intentionally unplug for a day of rest, something remarkable often happens: our innate creativity begins to blossom.

I've seen it time and again in my own home when we power down screens for 24 hours on the weekend. Without the constant competition of digital distractions, our children naturally gravitate towards baking, crafting together, or even learning new songs on their instruments. For me, it might mean pulling out paints or craft supplies to create cards I take joy in sending to others.

It’s as if the quiet space of Sabbath invites inspiration to flow freely, allowing us to tap into wells of imagination we often don't even realize are there amidst our busy weeks. This isn't about being productive with our creativity, but simply allowing it to emerge organically, a gentle flourishing in the stillness.

Maybe this is the week where you return to something you used to love, remembering that creativity still lives inside you. Maybe you’ll experience a quiet early morning where no one needs anything yet, and you find a spark in the quiet.

What creative sparks might ignite within you if you intentionally stepped away from screens and busyness for a Sabbath rest? What simple, restful choice can you make this week to welcome that stillness?

I’m leading an upcoming retreat in November, but it is currently at full capacity. I will be leading several others in the future, but they are not yet open to book. Here are the dates, if you want to look at your calendar. I’ll post when they are available online.
