Sabbath as an Act of Resistance

“Come to me...I will give you rest.” --Matthew 11:28

Summer Plans by Lore Pemberton

In a world that constantly whispers, "Do more, achieve more, be more," the idea of intentionally stopping for a full day of sabbath rest can feel utterly counter-cultural, even radical. We're all familiar with that ever-growing to-do list, the laundry piles, the emails, the endless tasks that seem to multiply faster than we can tackle them. Our culture glorifies productivity, convincing us that our worth is tied to how much we accomplish. But what if we paused? What if we dared to resist that relentless push? Practicing Sabbath is precisely this act of resistance, a courageous "no" to the world's demands and a resounding "yes" to divine trust. It's about feeling the urge to "just do one more thing" and choosing, instead, to lay it down, trusting that the world will indeed keep spinning without our constant striving. That laundry will still be there, those emails will wait, and God is surely managing whatever is beyond our immediate gaze.

Maybe this is the Sabbath where you stop trying to accomplish anything — and just allow yourself to be. Maybe you simply need to pause long enough to ask, "What really matters to me right now?"

How might you begin to resist the urge to “just do one more thing” this coming Sabbath, trusting that God will hold it all? What practical steps can you take to truly cease striving and toiling for a dedicated 24 hours?
